We did it!

Rachel and I ran the Marine Corps Marathon yesterday and both had an amazing weekend. I finished in 4:40, which was in the range of where I was hoping to finish. I have gone over the race many times in my head and found a few things I could have done better, but overall I am extremely proud of my first marathon.

I am even more proud of Rachel and her race. She had an ambitious goal and hit it exactly! There was a spot around mile 24 when I was able to find Rachel on a switchback when she was at about mile 22. I waved her down, gave her a kiss and she told me she was on pace and going to get her goal. Even though I was starting to slow down more than I wanted to at that point, Rachel’s excitement and success gave me a boost to keep running.

I now have my sights set on the 2012 New York City Marathon. I am going to take this week off then start the 52-week training countdown until my next marathon.

MCM 2011 – Finished!

Travis and I successfully completed the Marine Corps Marathon yesterday… and it was amazing! I had a great race and a wonderful day. One of the best days ever.

Travis finished in 4:40. I finished in 5:00. I wish I could have gotten my 4:59 goal… but I am totally ok with just PRing. I ran faster than my 19-year-old self in San Diego in 2000… Anyway, I hope to post a full recap of the experience tomorrow…

brooklyn, we go hard

A photo of all of your race gear set out the night before is sort of a tradition… so here is mine for tomorrow’s Marine Corps Marathon. Racing singlet, number, bra, tights, hat, water bottle, fuel, shoes, socks, and a big robe to wear in the morning to stay warm. Lots of stuff for a five-hour adventure!

This is our awesome team tonight adding the final decorations to our singlets. I wish I could see them all cross the finish line tomorrow… unfortunately, I will still be running when most of them finish, but I can’t wait to hear all of the race stories. I really wish I could see Travis finish! This is his first marathon, but he seems totally chill and ready.

Ok. It is 11 pm. I better get to sleep.

Also: our theme song.

Washington, DC!

Here we go! We are off to DC today on the TNT bus. We’ll be stopping by the Marine Corps Marathon Expo tonight to pick up our race numbers, having a team pasta party tomorrow, and then Sunday morning, we run. I am excited and nervous… but my singlet is decorated (with many jewels), my nails are painted purple, and we’ve packed a giant bag of pre-race food… so I think I am ready.

My bib # is 32036. Travis is # 32037. You might need that info if you want to track us during the race via text message or social media. I will be tweeting my progress on @rljart and I’ll be posting some race day info to Facebook. But, this year I am going to try to concentrate a bit more on racing and try not to wear out my phone battery like last year

My internal mantra is, “This will be my best race ever.” A little ambitious maybe, but it could happen. The weather is supposed to be perfect on race day and I am feeling very healthy. I guess we’ll see on Sunday!

Thank you so much to everyone who donated to our fundraising efforts for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Travis and I are so happy to be running with Team in Training.

taper madness

In an attempt to be a little less aggressive with the running talk this year, I’ve neglected to report on the current state of our training! Travis and I run the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC, this Sunday!! Eek. I am nervous. But ready. I think I am ready.

At the end of September, we ran the 5th Ave Mile, a quick one-mile race down Fifth Avenue. Of course, we ran the 12 miles there from Brooklyn as part of our training, so my race time wasn’t exactly a speed record. It was fun, though. Such a quick, little race! (That is me crossing the finish line above. Here is Travis.) Of course, we had brunch afterward.

Just two weeks ago, we ran the Staten Island Half Marathon (photos above). It was our last race before the full marathon and it was setting up to be my best event of the year. Travis and I ate correctly in the days leading up to it, we rested, and I created a seemingly perfect race plan for myself that would have given me a near PR. Despite problems with the Staten Island Ferry (we waited for over and hour and were late to the race), my run started out great. I was following my plan and sure that I was going to finish better than ever. But… at mile 10 it sort of all fell apart. It got hot. I got really sore in my feet — weird — and I just couldn’t finish strong. My time was still my best half marathon of the year, but I was six minutes slower than my goal. I would be totally fine with my result, except that the SI Half was meant to be a mini version of my marathon race plan. The fact that I couldn’t quite pull it off makes me worried about what I can realistically accomplish in DC on Sunday.

My goal, of course, is to finish the MCM in under 5 hours. I don’t know if it is possible. I am creating a couple race plan scenarios, but I think the most important thing I can do is stay calm, relaxed, and slow in the beginning. It is hard to escape the excitement and second-guessing that happens at the beginning of a race, though.

So many aspects of endurance running are mental challenges. For example, right now we are in the “taper” segment of our training. Basically, in the last few weeks before a big event, you cut way back on your mileage and try to rest up. But the taper can play with your mind. As your body repairs, you get little aches and pains that freak you out (I had a calf cramp the other day for no apparent reason) and you start to convince yourself that you need one more big run before the event. I imagine it is sort of like people stranded on a raft at sea who can’t take it any more and start drinking salt water. Runners have a hard time resisting running during the taper. I think Travis and I will stay strong, though.

Tonight is our last TNT Group Training Session before our race. We won’t run a lot, but I am wearing my marathon outfit just to test it all out one more time. Gotta make sure it is all perfect! After that, all we can do is rest and try not to succumb to taper madness…

The Johnsons Conquer NYC

These photos pretty much sum up the Johnson’s trip to New York last week. We did some touristy stuff interspersed with a LOT of sweets. We visited Magnolia Bakery, Crumbs Cupcakes, Dylan’s Candy Bar, Serendipity III, and the brand new Laduree macaron shop. Thank goodness we also walked many miles each day!

My favorite tourist attraction was Top of the Rock. I hadn’t been up there before and we went on a beautiful day. The view was awesome and I loved taking photos of the city spread out below us.

I want to blog more about the fun I had exploring the city with Travis’ family, but my goal of blogging every day sort of fell apart (once again) while I’ve been getting caught up on work after their visit. The good news is that you can pretty much re-live our whole adventure via my Flickr set — be warned: it is over 300 photos!

YACHT

Some amazing, sci-fi inspired music entertainment for you on this Saturday:

YACHT Utopia / Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire)

YACHT is so weird. And so awesome. I love them. Travis and I are going to see them in concert tomorrow at the Brooklyn Night Bazaar. I am pretty pumped.

clutter love

I always thought I could create one of those beautifully styled homes you see in decor magazines. I know that they are not reality, but I still thought I’d be the one person who could make it a reality. Ha! In my actual reality, I have a love/hate relationship with clutter. I want a tidy home, but I love to surround myself with little tidbits that remind me of the people and experiences that I love.

This is my office desk area. It is craziness. Really. So many little things — hung on the wall, arranged on the shelves, stacked on books, and pinned to bulletin boards. I really worry people who visit will think I am a hoarder, but I actually do have a semi-successful organization system.

All of the things near my desk are reminders. Reminders of things I need to get done or reminders of people who make me happy. In this photo you can find representations of nearly every one of my family members, plus Swap-bot goodies, Team in Training memorabilia, and just plain, pretty stuff that I like to look at. I don’t think I’ll ever change my cluttered ways.
