Weekend Update! Plus the bet

Monday, May 30th, 2005

What a weekend. I got home late Friday night from Austin TX. Waiting for me in my driveway were 14 yards of mulch. i could tell it was going to be a long weekend. Saturday morning Travis met Chelsea and me at the house at 8 AM and we spent four joyous hours spreading mulch. Despite the fact it was hard work it was fun. Scott got off the hock because he was scheduled to work. At least he said he was scheduled to work. After working on the mulch, Trav helped me with my computer. I’ve signed up for audible.com but wasn’t able to get the downloads working right. I think we’ve (read Travis) got it fixed. I won’t know for sure until I download another book. My first book to download _ “The Last of the Mohicans.” I’m not sure what else I will download this month – under the program i signed up with I get two downloads free the first month. I’m thinking about “1776.” I’ve just about finished reading the world is flat – great book – see my earlier post.

Saturday afternoon was party party time! First we went to Seth’s graduation party. It was a very nice time – I only wish we could have stayed longer. Besides the real graduation gift we gave him I gave him my copy of Abbot and Costello’s “Africa Screams.” I’m sure his experience in the Peace Corp will be a little different than what happens in the movie but it should get him ready for everything.

After that party we went to Papa’s 80th birthday party. He turned 80 a couple of weeks ago but this was the first weekend that Fred and Lu could get to town to celebrate. Unfortunately I forgot my camera so I don’t have any pictures to post of either party.

Sunday after church I mowed the lawn and put down some more mulch.

Sunday night we went to Bob Phillip’s house for dinner. We had a great steak dinner and took the walk around his property. He lives on 5 1/2 acres in Bonner Springs and he has a natural spring at the back of his lot. After dinner we sat around and visited and ate ice cream.

This is a photo of us starting our walk.

The holiday started with Scott, Chelsea and I finishing up the mulch. After which I power washed out the garage. The four of us than watched the movie “Against the Ropes” with Omar Epps and Meg Ryan. We really enjoyed it. Last night at Bob’s before we left he offered to loan us some movies from his DVD collection. He told us we needed to take five. His theory is that if we have five we will be sure to return them because we’d feel too guilty keeping that many. So this was the first of the five.

I really wrote this much boring stuff to make Jerry suffer to find out that he is now down by 10! No thanks to my Royals. I went to the game in Texas on Tuesday night to see the Ranger beat the Royals again. If it weren’t for how bad the Royals are Jerry would be in real trouble.

Birthday Update (the bet)

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

I still don’t have a voice – so all i can do is write on my blog. Well i could watch tv or read a book or even so some work (but I’ve done enough of that today) so I thought I give a birthday update with the score. At first I was a little fearful of finding out bad news on my birthday – like the same day i gain another year I lose another point to Jerry. fortunately it didn’t happen.

I now up six. I gain a point in both the national and American leagues yesterday. Let’s hope my birthday gives me even more success. You don’t know how embarrassing it is for someone like Jerry to be this close to me in a bet over baseball.

Bush Update

According to this and this the public is starting to figure it out.

I’m only ahead by 4

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

This years bet is looking like a close race. my lead has dwindled to 4. Jerry had a very good last few days with his American League teams. It’s hard to believe that he could be so lucky. I went to my first two games of the season. On Saturday night June, Travis, Rachel, Scott, Chelsea and I went to the game to see the Cards beat our royals by one run. We had a lot of fun, although the girls took 3 innings to get the food and when they were in their seats they weren’t watching the game. Chelsea was reading a wedding magazine and discussing the finer points with Rachel and june.

On Sunday afternoon Travis and I went to the game with Bruce and Jeff and saw the Royals take a laugher. The Cards had as many errors as hits. It was hard to tell who was the first place team and who was the last place team. A big thank you to Aaron for the tickets.

we ended the weekend with a visit from Gabe – he is just getting cuter all the time. although i think he was a little fussy because we wouldn’t let him have any of the pizza.

Garage Sale

Saturday, May 21st, 2005

Our neighborhood had a garage sale today. June, chelsea, scott and I walked from garage to garage looking for good junk to buy. I found this antique camera for my niece Heidi. She is a collector of cameras. As soon as I came across it I gave her a call and found out she was half way to Omaha with Liam. She gave me the OK to purchase it site unseen. I’m waiting until she gets home to find out what she thinks, Aaron said she’ll like it – plus he gave me a check to cover my expenses so even if she doesn’t like it I’m OK. That is as long as June gets to the bank first thing Monday morning with the check. What do you think?

The guy I bought it from says it works, that he bought it about 30 years ago and it is at least 50 years old. He said that it is the type of camera that is used to take black and white school pictures.

Trolley Run

Friday, May 20th, 2005

Here is the link to the official pictures from the Trolley Run. Unfortunately Rachel and I are in different frames. You’d think that since she is in the picture in front of me that she ran the race faster, but as everyone knows who I’ve been able to tell, i completed the four miles one second faster than Rachel – who is 28 years younger than me!

The Bet I’m Still Up by 8!

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

My lead dropped to 7 yesterday (according to Jerry’s post) but I’ve regained by 8 point margin. In this bet that’s not much. The Yankees finally lost last night, i’m hoping they get back to their losing ways of April and that May is just a fluke – but I fear it’s not and Jerry’s number one pick will start playing up to their abilities.

The World Is Flat

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

I’m reading a great book right now: The World Is Flat; A brief History of The Twenty-First Century. I recommend it to everyone who reads this blog. And to even those who don’t. The book attempts to explain the key events that have changed the world over the last few years. Thomas Friedman crafts a great picture of events that have empowered the Indian and Chinese economies to compete with us in a manner that I would never had expected 10 years ago.
In the last election there was a lot of talk about out sourcing of American jobs. One of the things this book accomplishes is a understanding of how and why it is happening. I’ve only read about 1/3 of the book so far (just started it yesterday) but I am reaching the conclusion that we can gain as much from out sourcing as we lose. It’s just part of the on going economic changes, and while we need to control it we shouldn’t stop it. Well read the book, I’m sure you’ll get a lot more out of it. I especially recommend it to anyone in there 20s.

The Bet I’m up by 8

Monday, May 16th, 2005

As many of my soon to be loyal reader know I have an annual bet with Jerry Smith. Or as we refer to it “the bet” – because there really isn’t any other bet that is worth talking about. The bet is a baseball bet and at one time we referred to our selfs as the betting baseball gourmets, because the prise of the bet is food.

Here’s how the bet works – in a draft system – with last years loser drafting first we chose 2 winning and 2 losing teams in each league. Each win or lose for our teams counts as one point. The person with the most points at the end of the season is treat to a meal at the most expensive restaurant they can find. Originally the loser was required to fix a gourmet meal with out any help for the four of us (yes June and Susan get to join us for the meal – after all they suffer through a full season of us updating them on “the score”). About 17 years ago we changed the rules to going out to a nice place because Jerry insisted on using goat cheese on much of what he made.

This is our 23rd season and here are our teams for the year:

Smith Winners: New York Yankees, Boston, St Louis and Florida Smith Losers: Washington, Milwaukee , Toronto and Kansas City

Johnson Winners: Los Angeles Angels, Minnesota, Atlanta and Chicago Cubs Johnson Losers: Colorado, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Seattle

As of today – i’m up by 8 points. This year has been interesting because neither of us as taken a commanding lead.

At the payoff Dinner

This is a photo of Jerry and I in New Orleans the site of the 2005 Payoff Dinner. Next year we will be going to Santa Fe where i hope to find the most expensive restaraunt in town – that is if i can continue in the lead – if Jerry somehow wins for the 8th time of the 23 seasons we might I will suggest Burger King.
