The Bet – Update

Friday, June 24th, 2005

OK, June thinks I’m getting ready for vacation right now, And in a way I am. I know a lot of readers depend on me to update them on the score and it’s only right that I take this time from my hurried existence to do just that.

I’ve increased by margin to plus 18. GO Nationals!

A short Period of inactivity

Monday, June 20th, 2005

I’m on my way out of town for business today and will not return until late friday night. Saturday morning we are leaving for vacation with orval and susan. So i’m not sure if i will be able to post before we head out to Colorado. If not I’ll post again in July.

One more point of interest (to me at least), Friday night I met a young couple from Nepal over at June’s folks. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone from Nepal before, and I’m sure I’ve never been there. It was very interesting to hear their story. Among other things that I found intereting is that they have an arranged marriage.

Top Ten Fiction Authors

Saturday, June 18th, 2005

OK, enough already. I’ve been asked over and over, “Brad, when are you going to post another top ten?” First let me tell you i’ve heard your pleas and it just takes time to get one together. Sorry for the delay and I hope it hasn’t caused anyone any hardships.

For my second top ten list I decided to list my favorite authors. My first thought was to do my top ten books, but that would be just too hard to do. So here it is my top ten authors – Starting with number 10, with number one being my favorite.

  1. Tess Gerristen – really good medical drama. Easy to read and good stories.
  2. Vince Flynn. I have to thank Jerry for introducing me to this author. Good political drama.
  3. Steve Martini – His early work is better in my opinion than the recent stuff – but still good enough to make my top ten.
  4. Sue Grafton - It’s always fun to see what her PI Kinsey has to say. I also like the way her books take place in the time period where she started her series.
  5. Clive Cussler – ok his stories aren’t believable , but they sure are fun.
  6. Brad Meltzer – Don’t start a Meltzer novel unless you don’t have to go to work for awhile.
  7. Harper Lee - Ok she only wrote one novel – but what a novel!
  8. Robert Ludlum - I even like the books his family has hired other authors to write now that he is dead.

The hard part was deciding between my favorite two. The way I did it was to imagine that on Christmas I was given the newest book by both authors and i had to chose which to start reading first by picking one with out reading the inside dust jacket. Then i thought would i save the best to last or read the best first. So that really didn’t help. So I just went for it.

1. Nelson Demille

The Downing Street Memo

Friday, June 17th, 2005

It took a while before we in America heard about the now famous Downing Street Memo. There is lots of speculation as to why our news media ignored the memos. My guess is that the claim that President Bush and friends manipulated us into war wasn’t new. Many respected people have been putting that theory forward for a long time. (See Bob Woodward’s Plan of Attack)

Finally, the Downing Street memo is getting that attention.

It’s very interesting, especially the parts that refers to Sir Richard Dearlove, the head of the British Secret Intelligence Service (referred to only as “C” in the memo.)

According to the memo Bush made up is mind without any facts and decided to find the facts afterwards. And that we never planned on working with the UN. Which is which Richard Clark has been saying all along.

The key part of the memo:

“C reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. The NSC had no patience with the U.N. route … There was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action.”

DAvid DeJesus or Carlos Beltran

Friday, June 17th, 2005

I’m taking a vacation day today and I guess I don’t have much else to do but look at odd things.

here is an comparison of the current Royals center fielder David De Jesus and the former one Carlos Beltran. De Jesus Games – 60, Hits -66, Homers – 3, RBI – 27, Walks 20, SO – 30, SB – 2, Avg – .286

Beltran Games – 59, Hits – 63, Homers – 8, RBI – 32, Walks 20, SO – 44, SB -1, Avg – .278

Beltran strikes out a little more and hits a few more home runs – plus costs about 8 million more a year. I’d have to say good move Royals.

Of course Beltran is leading in voting for the All Star game and De Jesus isn’t even in the top 15.

SWEEP!

Thursday, June 16th, 2005

Travis, Scott and I had a great time at the game tonight. Our seats were on the rail, next to the press box on the club box level. As good as any seats I’ve ever had at a game. We made our plans to go to the game over the weekend. On Monday night Dave Dickson called and said he’d be out of town and couldn’t use his tickets and offered them to me. so we greatfully accepted and bought one more on the club box level. Luckily the seat next to our was unoccupied all game. The Royals won, 9 to 6 and we even got 12 hits earning us a dozen donuts. Fortunately we met Travis right next to the Krispy Kream store so it wasn’t out of the way at all to cash in on our first dozen. come on over in the morning if you want a donut.

The game was a little slow until the 6th inning when we scored 6 runs. I never thought I’d find my self cheering against the Dodgers, but tonight I did. And so did Travis.

The following is an excerpt from the Royals homepage:

“OK, winning five consecutive games might not mean that much to some teams, but in Kansas City that’s cause for a celebration. This has been a long, hard season. At least, until now.”

Travis took this picture of the scoreboard with the announced attendance of 16,182! small crowd but worth 194,184 donuts!

You can see all of his game photos here.

Royals or Dodgers

Thursday, June 16th, 2005

I’ve been faced with a conundrum – I’m going to the game tonight with Trav and Scott and haven’t been sure which hat to wear. My life-long team the dodgers or my current team the royals. After watching the last two games on the TV, i’ve decided that I’m cheering for the Royals so I’ll wear my KC cap. Of course the deciding factor may be that Jerry has picked the Royals to be one of his losers and I like seeing him denied points.

By the way Jerry’s teams have closed the gap a little and I’m only ahead by 15.

Look for us on TV tonight.
