“The trick is what one emphasizes.  We either make ourselves miserable or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is still the same.”
Carlos Castaneda
I’ve always liked this quote, I don’t think I used it before.
If I did, it must be worth repeating.

A week and a weekend left!

MY baseball bet with Jerry is coming down to the wire.  AS of right now I’m ahead by 17 points.  For those of you who might have forgotten how the bet works, before the season started we each drafted 2 winning teams and 2 losing teams in each league.  We get points when our teams when or lose, depending on what we chose.  Some of picks are pretty good – Jerry’s pick of Kansas City to lose, some aren’t so good – Jerry’s pick of Atlanta to win.  Some are so-so, my pick of Houston to win.  You wait a whole season and we each get about 700 to 750 points depending on how well we’ve picked.  This year we each did poorly in the draft and the winning total will be one of the lowest of the bets 24 season history.  The important thing, and the fact most people will remember is that once again (assuming my teams hold on to my lead for me) I will be victorious and Jerry and Susan will be buying June and I a rather expensive dinner.

I’ll keep you posted as the season winds up.

Quote of the Day September 21 (All The King’s Men)

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

Do you know what good comes out of?…Out of bad. That’s what good comes out of. Because you can’t make it out of anything else. You didn’t know that, did you?

Robert Penn Warren

I first read All The King’s Men about 30 to 35 years ago. It’s the kind of book that grips you and hangs on to your thoughts. Robert Penn Warren is both a novelist and poet, his ability to tell a story with an overpowering use of the language is riveting. T

The book is being remade into another movie and will be released this week. I haven’t seen the Broadrick Crawford, 1939 movie, but I do know that it is considered one of the all time great movies. The early reviews are mixed. I decided I would reread the book before I see the movie and I’m about 75% through. I hope to finish before the movie leaves the theaters. I’d also like to get the original movie and watch it to see the differences. I heard that the person who wrote this screenplay never saw the original movie based on the book. Could be interesting.
