The cost of the presidential election

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Today there is a front-page article in the USA Today that says we will spend 5.3 billion on the presidential election. That seems like a lot of money, I know this is the most expensive election ever, as each of the last 10 presdential elections have been. The “perspective” comes in that it is estimated that we will spend 6 billion on Halloween this year. That says to me, if measured by our spending, having a good time on Halloween is four times more important to us than who is elected president. After all we have four Halloweens for every one presidential election.

Am I right; is Halloween four times as important?

A Derivative Poem

Friday, October 17th, 2008

I got an email the other day from someone at Graceland that is putting together a book of poems from Graceland poets. I’m not sure i fit into that category, but i did submit one. (doesn’t that sound like i have a lot to chose from?)

the book will come out the end of next year. I’m kind of hoping that it’s a high class book and I get rejected. If that’s the case my poem will never be read. Unless I post it on the bbb and someone reads it. that’s what I’ll do:

Derivative
By b gunner johnson

I’m writing this poem with the fear of it being labeled derivative, or worse; me, Of who or what – I don’t know. Of Dickenson, or Poe, or Barr or Wallace Is this a fear that lurks in the hearts of all of us? Of my father, the poet – the buffalo by the sea? Of the unknown reader – of someone who looks through me?

Will the reader’s eyes dance among the words? Or stomp with joy their pretentious flow? Can these words rise – can they inspire? can they evoke a heroic heart? Can they dance at the wedding of Harmonia and Cadmus? Can they bring out the best in us? Can they reflect greatness, can they stop a war? Encourage recycling, eliminate poverty and racism? Can they forge plowshares out of spears? Can they bring a smile to a friend or enemy? Are they the best that’s inside of me? Or are they derivative and meaningless?

(Is it derivative in line 12 to allude to the Greeks or is it better to mention Ginsburg and the Beats?)

Is meter and rhyme important today? Is it derivative to balance what I say? Is a poem about a poem about a poem or me? Is it derivative of the past, can it set my soul free?

Is being labeled derivative the same thing as being derivative?

I’m finishing this poem with a fear a fear of it not being labeled derivative. Of having wasted my GU education. What if it’s not a poem, but the ramblings of an unstable ego? What if it’s revealing something about me, something I don’t know? Is it nothing like Bishop or G1 or Eliot or Frost? What if it reflects a part of my soul that is lost? Am I a fool to answer the nine muses’ call? Is it better to have rhymed and lost than to not have rhymed at all?

(I hope you noticed another reference to the Greeks in line 34.) October 2008.

Happy Birthday Travis.

Today’s the day. or is it 28 years ago was the day? Either way Happy Birthday Travis.

I now know why the Republicans are going to lose the election.

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

I bet you think I’m going to say something like:

1) Obama connects with people on a level that McCanin. Or 2) McCain showed that he has very poor judgment in selecting Palin for his VP. Or 3) The country is ready for a change from the fail economic policies of Bush. Or 4) The country is ready for a change from the fail foreign policy of Bush. Or 5) Obama is inspiring and fills the nation with hope in a time of despair and desolation. Or
6) It’s just the Democrats turn to win. Or
7) Most Americans believe that the earth is older than 6,000 years and would like a government that supports science education. Or 8) Americans are want to have a leader who restores our leadership among nations. Or 9) “Drill, baby drill,” is not an energy policy. It’s a slogan that shows you have no grasp of the difficult, complex, and intricate situation we are in by relying so completely on fossil fuel. Or
10) Old white guys haven’t done such a good job, maybe it’s time to give someone else a chance.

Well those are ten good reasons, and I’m sure that if I tried I could come up with 10 times that in additional reasons, but last Wednesday I found out the true reason. As many of you know I’m a political button collector. The Republican state headquarters for Arkansas is right down the street from my hotel in Little Rock so I decided to drop in to see about getting a “McCain / Palin button.” (Yes, I collect from both parties!) on my way in I noticed an older man driving a hybrid pull in before me. (Two things, think how old this guy must be for me to call him old, and think about the chances of a republican driving a hybrid.)
Anyways, this old guy arrived in the office before me and when I entered the girl behind the reception counter had already gotten the state director from her office to handle this guy’s complaint. (By the way, this state director looks a lot like Tina Fay doing Sarah Palin.) The old guy was showing a McCain / Palin bumper sticker to the director and saying that he’d paid a dollar for it and it was much smaller than the Obama / Biden stickers. The director politely explained that this smaller size was the only size they were getting in and the old guy yelled, “You guys are losing this election for us! I can’t believe this!” He stomped out and tried to slam the door shut behind him. Under her breath I heard the state director say, “I hate people like that.” She quickly turned to me and apologized to me for making that statement. I felt very bad for her, even though she looks like Sarah Palin (truthfully she didn’t have the evil glint of malice and malevolence in her eyes like Palin) so I attempted to make her feel better by saying something like McCain was up by over 10% in Arkansas and encouraged her to forget about it.

Sadly they were out of buttons so I still don’t have a McCain Palin button yet. But I did find out the reason that the Republicans are going to lose.
