Obama and the Hitler Comparison

hitler30.jpghitler30.jpg20081112_070952_paul_broun_300.jpgGeorgia Congressman Paul Broun made a big splash in the news this week when he compared President-Elect Obama to Adolf Hitler and his Marxist governance. Although his comments were to a local service club they were wild enough to make the national news on just about every station. He was even featured on The Daily Show. The uproar has caused him to apologize for his remarks. One of the things I have found most interesting about this whole thing is that as far as I can tell no one has pointed out that Hitler wasn’t a Marxist. Hitler was a Fascists. If Congressman Broun didn’t learn this in High School history he could have found out this bit of information on Wikipedia. I would like to think that our Congressman/Congresswomen, even the Republican one, know enough history and political science to know who Hitler was and how he took over the German Government. Hitler’s rise to power was the results of many colliding events, certainly one tactic he used was demonizing one group of people and splitting the public with hate, would it be unfair to point out that this is similar to what Congressman Broun was attempting to do by comparing Obama to Hitler?

I don’t know if it’s unfair or not, but I know it would be unfair to seriously claim there are similarities in thought because Broun and Hitler used the same tactic.

It’s like comparing the proposed Obama tax cuts to socialism. To even make such an assertion is to show you don’t know the first thing about economics, and so you’re not qualified to run the country (or even run Alaska). (Although I actually think it shows that you believe that most people listening to you don’t know the first thing about economics, which in a different way suggests you’re not worthy to run the country.)
