happy 14th day of february…

I like Valentine’s Day, but I think mostly because it is close to my birthday… and I LOVE my birthday. I don’t have any big plans for today. I need to finish up a lot of work, go for a run, and then maybe meet some fun friends for a casual dinner. My usual Tuesday routine. I might treat myself to a special Starbucks drink this afternoon…

Travis and I don’t do much for Valentine’s Day. I don’t need any silly gifts (or expensive ones, for that matter) and Travis said he would have a heart attack if I sent a singing telgram to his work… so that spoils my one good idea. ha!

I don’t think today needs to be a day for romantic gestures. It is too much pressure. I’m happy just acknowledging all of the big and small loves in my life…

MCM 2011 – Finished!

Travis and I successfully completed the Marine Corps Marathon yesterday… and it was amazing! I had a great race and a wonderful day. One of the best days ever.

Travis finished in 4:40. I finished in 5:00. I wish I could have gotten my 4:59 goal… but I am totally ok with just PRing. I ran faster than my 19-year-old self in San Diego in 2000… Anyway, I hope to post a full recap of the experience tomorrow…

8 years

Today is our 8th wedding anniversary. It truly has been eight amazing and exciting years. No complaints, and lots of love.

Last night I forced everyone to go to my favorite restaurant, Prime Meats, so I think that was my celebration.

The traditional 8th anniversary gift is Bronze or Pottery… so I am thinking about getting Travis a fancy spittoon or chamber pot… what do you think?

pride is the word

By now I hope you already know (because if you are getting your news from me, you might be in trouble) that New York State passed a bill allowing same-sex marriage — a huge step in marriage equality and human rights. What an awesome and happy achievement!

When the bill passed on Friday night I was eating pasta with Team in Training friends (Becca, Jessica, Travis, me, and Brian in the photo above) in preparation for a race in the morning — the Front Runners New York Lesbian and Gay Pride Run, to be specific. We all cheered and treated ourselves to more carbs. We had already planned to run the race on Saturday morning, but it felt really good to have a concrete way to celebrate marriage equality.

I truly felt proud to show my support for a cause that I believe in whole-heartedly. It was such a great race and jubilant day! I did my best to keep up with my reluctant TNT pacer and friend, Larry (seen to the right), and we ran hand-in-hand across the finish line like the two goofballs that we are. Everyone got rainbow popsicles at the finish line. Then we all went to brunch. Then we went to Shake Shack for shakes. A Saturday in NYC doesn’t get much better!

The passage of the marriage equality bill makes me happy for infinite reasons, and one of those reasons is that it shows that change can happen. It can take a long time, it can be very difficult, but we CAN work to shape our government and our country.

I do not get overly political on the internet. Mostly because I work extremely hard to stay positive. I have no desire to add to the constant negativity, hurtfulness, and criticism that seems to be unending online. I do appreciate the importance of critical thinking and constructive criticism, but I personally choose to try to emphasize the positive when possible. Probably this positivity comes across as simple-minded to some, but even though it is sometimes hard to resist, you will not (hopefully) find me ranting on politicians I do not like. Instead I’d like to celebrate the things I do support… like my president… my governor… and marriage equality in New York! woohoo!

sweetness + sunshine

Before I forget all of the details, I wanted to write down everything about Adam and Nina’s wedding. It was such a great day! So sunny and warm!

Nina and Adam met in med school at KU. They both graduate in about three weeks and planned their wedding and honeymoon to correspond with their move to Portland, Oregon, for their residencies. A killer busy time, but very exciting!

Adam and Nina were married on Friday, April 29th — same as the royal couple, but they picked the date first!

In the morning, I went to get my hair done with Nina and the other bridesmaids. Nina seemed to be in an awesome mood (which is more than I can say for myself at my wedding day hair appointment) and all of the hair-dos seemed to go smoothly. (I had wanted something similar to this and my sweet hairdresser got it reasonably close.) Nina was wearing her hair down, so it was set in curls and then pinned up while we traveled to the hotel to eat lunch, change, and do our makeup. The photographer met us at the hotel and took some “backstage” shots while we got ready.

We left Nina and Adam alone with the photographer to get their “first look” shots and then we all traveled to Loose Park to take wedding party photos in the Rose Garden. The outside photos are going to be spectacular! Even the quick ones I snapped with my crappy little camera look fabulous. It was really windy, which was a bit annoying, but I know that there are going to be some awesome shots of Nina’s veil blowing in the wind. Both the bride and groom looked great, but I don’t think Adam will mind me saying that Nina was especially breathtaking.

I had a lot of fun with the picture taking — as evidenced here — but soon we had to head over to Studio B, the ceremony location. It was slightly hectic getting ready for the ceremony. A few key people were a little late, some of the ceremony procedure had to be ironed out… but it all worked out perfectly.

There was a quick ceremony before the official Persian ceremony by a representative from city hall. Nina had arranged the preliminary ceremony just to make 100% sure that everything was totally legal. Their Persian officiant was from Texas and not technically recognized by the state of Missouri. The preliminary ceremony was actually really sweet. The wedding party got to gather around and witness as they exchanged vows. Then, we all lined up for our processional into the main room for the Persian Ceremony with all of the guests.

Adam and Nina had a traditional Persian wedding ceremony. It was very pretty and fascinating. Nina wrote the following info about the ceremony for the programs:

A traditional Persian ceremony is centered around a spread called the Sofreh Aghd (seen in the photo above).  Every item on the Sofreh Aghd symbolizes different qualities that the couple hopes to bring into their new life.

The items and their symbolic meanings:
Mirror – To bring light and brightness into the future
Two candelabras – Fire and energy
Flat bread – Prosperity for feasts
Eggs, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts – Fertility
Crystallized sugar – To ensure sweetness in life
Gold coins – Wealth and prosperity
Rose water – God’s blessings for the couple
Termeh (traditional Persian embroidered cloth) – Family and tradition
Wild rue – For health and to keep away evil
Prayer rug – Importance of prayer
Sweets and pastries - Eaten after the ceremony in celebration
Naan-o-panir (bread and cheese) – Eaten after the ceremony in celebration

Two large sugar canes will be ground over the couple throughout the ceremony. This represents showering the couple with sweetness and happiness.

Traditionally, the groom will be asked if he wishes to enter the marriage.  Then the bride will be asked three times if she wishes to enter the marriage, and it is not until the third time that she will answer.

When the ceremony comes to an end, the couple exchanges a taste of honey to represent the first taste of a happy new life.

I was so thrilled to be part of the wedding party. I got to help hold a pretty cloth over Adam and Nina during the ceremony and grind some of the sugar on top. The officiant was a lot of fun and made the ceremony personal. Adam used my grandfather’s ring as his wedding band and the officiant asked my grandmother about its provenance during the ceremony — my grandfather wore the ring non-stop for 54 years! Very Special!

After the ceremony, we all headed over to the Berg Event Space for the reception. The venue, an urban loft, is really pretty with exposed beams, big windows, and wood floors. My Mom and Dad and my sister-in-law, Amber, had done all of the table and decoration set-up earlier in the day and everything was lovely.

The reception was just total fun. The food was great, Persian dishes with rice, plus an amazing three-tier cake made by Nina’s aunt, and there was lots of music and dancing. I wish I could have danced more, but I spent most of the night socializing and talking with family and friends. I also snuck out with my brothers and a few cousins to decorate the happy couple’s getaway car. We had a good time.

It was a really full day, but I just let myself relax and enjoy it. (That is much easier to do when you aren’t the bride!) It was wonderful to be with my parents and brothers. They each really stepped up and did a lot of work to make sure the day ran smoothly. My brothers (and sisters-in-law) are really my favorite people in the world. It is odd that they are all adults now with skills and interests that I know little about, but I love them more than ever. My only regret from the night was that I didn’t get to spend more time with Adam and Nina. Understandably, they had a lot of people to meet and greet and the night flew by, but now they are off in Greece on their honeymoon and then they will be off in Portland starting their life together. I may not get to hang out with them for a while …gosh… I guess this is a glimpse of what parents feel!

Travis’ dad took some video during the night and he put together this cute “movie trailer” — I can’t wait to see the full video! Also, here is the link to my Nina & Adam Wedding Flickr Photo Set one more time.

the most wonderful man in the world

i love you

I believe there is only one man in the world with the patience, kindness, and determination to put up with my crazy self… I feel so incredibly lucky to have found him so early in my life!

My sweet, hard working, brilliant genius of a husband turns THIRTY today!!! (Wild fun fact: We’ve been together – and basically inseparable – since before Travis’ 17th birthday and for all the birthdays in between!) I cannot imagine my life without him and I know that every single thing I have accomplished in my adult life has only come with his help and support. What a heavy and humbling thought, but also a testament to teamwork and devotion.

I love you, Travis! Happy birthday!

And, as an extra special gift… I’ll leave you with the immortal lyrics from my favorite song from my favorite parody hair band:

I believe in a thing called love
Just listen to the rhythm of my heart
There’s a chance we could make it now
We’ll be rocking ’til the sun goes down
I believe in a thing called love

today

ice bath recoveryToday is a Saturday, which means it is long run day with Team in Training. You may not believe this, because I barely believe it myself, but I ran 18 miles today! It was about four hours of running, jogging, water re-fueling, more jogging, and eventually hobbling, but I completed it… and even had some fun in the process. We ran through Brooklyn down to the water near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Staten Island. Running all over the city has really helped me come to appreciate it more and more, and I couldn’t help but think about how amazing it is that I have the extreme luxuries of both health and time that allow me to take on this challenge. I am very grateful. (I am also grateful for my sweet husband who set me up in a recovery ice bath to sooth my sore muscles!)

Today is also September 11th, which makes it heavy and sad… but also hopeful. Not that I intend to, but you can’t really ignore 9/11 in NYC… Many of the fire stations here (if not all) have permanent 9/11 memorials, but one we ran by today had a special memorial with framed photos set up outside for the anniversary… I can’t really even write about it without crying, and I am not very eloquent anyway, but even through the sadness there are infinite reasons to be hopeful. The love in people far outweighs the hate. That is where I put my faith. That is my religion.

in need of sweetness

i love you

I am not a religious person, but I have an unshakable faith in the power of love.

…and in the power of sweets!
