Sundance: West of Memphis

You’ve already heard about my snowy adventure in Park City, but I feel compelled to tell you a little bit more about the one Sundance film I got to see: West of Memphis.

You know when you are watching Law & Order and there is that unbelievably lazy or prejudiced cop or prosecutor who just wants to close a case and so they hastily pin a crime on someone without sufficient evidence? I always thought those were dramatic exaggerations… who could ever be ok with knowingly putting an innocent person in jail?!

Turns out… lazy, stupid people are real… and some of them work in our justice system.

West of Memphis is a documentary about the West Memphis Three, three teenage boys who were accused, convicted, and sentenced to death row for killing three eight-year-old boys in Arkansas in 1993. I don’t want to tell the whole story, but basically the teens were completely innocent. The witnesses against them consisted of a bogus “satanic” expert, an unlicensed medical examiner, and a prosecutor who manufactured evidence. The boys spent 18 years in prison while devoted supporters around the world worked to prove their innocence.

Many parts of the film (which was produced by Peter Jackson, btw) made me uneasy and the entire thing was heartbreaking, but it was also eye-opening and ultimately hopeful. I recommend it.

past & present

I can’t help sharing the old photos I scanned over the holidays. They make me happy. This photo was taken 30 years ago. Isn’t my mom pretty?!

I’ve been a bit scatterbrained lately. I’ve still been trying to catch up on holiday work while simultaneously getting prepped to attend the Alt Design Summit in Utah next week. I am looking forward to the trip. I think it will be a fun conference.

What else have I been up to?

Well… I’ve been doing a lot of writing over at Ace Dept:

I am also hosting two Valentine swaps over on the ‘bot:

Come join us and receive some fun February mail!

Oooo!! I saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on Saturday (the new American one) and I actually liked it better than the book. They omitted many of the aspects of the book that I thought were silly/unbelievable/inconsistent. Plus, Daniel Craig’s attractive confidence made it more believable that every woman in the story wanted to sleep with him. I want to watch the Swedish version of the movie asap.

Ok, now I’m off to do our weekly run by the East River, under the Brooklyn Bridge, and over to the Brooklyn Shake Shack… yum… shakes….

and now it is august…

I’ve already complained about it plenty, but jury duty put me way behind on my work. The smart decision would have been to spend the weekends getting caught up, but we had already packed them full of running and fun-having.

So, how did I spend the second half of July?

  • We went to Travis’ boss’ wedding last weekend. It was an incredible party. Beautiful ceremony, amazing flowers, delicious food, fun dancing. The reception was at Chelsea Pier, right on the water. Plus, we got to hang out with some of our Oregon friends. I had a great time.
  • My timed 5k on the 26th went reasonable well. I ran it in 28:34. Near 9 min/mile pace. I’ll take it.
  • Travis took me to the MLS All Star Game on Wednesday. I was so tired that night and the All Stars lost to Manchester United and icky Wayne Rooney, but it was still a fun event. There were parachuters and fireworks!
  • On Saturday, we ran the Queens Half Marathon. (The photo above was taken as we arrived at Flushing Meadows Park at 6:30 in the morning.) I had a rough start to the race, but pulled it together and finished strong. Travis PR’d with a time that was 18 minutes faster than mine. My time was mediocre, but I think my training is starting to pay off in subtle ways. I was less dead after the race than in the past, despite the heat. I also felt more positive during the race – with complete confidence that I could finish strong. Now, I just have to start thinking about that full marathon coming up in October…
  • On Saturday night we went to see Cowboys & Aliens. I really enjoyed it. It was definitely superior to Captain America. Plus, it had Harrison Ford, who was perfect as the grumpy, old war hero. He is 70 years old!! And he was running around looking awesome and throwing spears through aliens! I was impressed. Daniel Craig is probably too good of an actor for a comic book movie, but he looked excellent in the chaps, so he was a good choice. The movie was maybe a little too sci-fi-y in the second half for the general public, but I liked it all. There was even a cute dog character!
  • Yesterday, we had a fun day of pool partying with TNT friends and watching Waiting for Guffman (which strangely, I had never seen) on our friend Becca’s deck/movie theater. A great end to a fun summer weekend.

And in other big news… Today, I bought a ticket to the Altitude Design Summit. The conference is happening in Salt Lake City in January. This is the third year of the creative, online entrepreneur event, but it will be my first time attending. I am excited! It is a really fashionable event with big name (in the blogging community) speakers and fun sponsors (like Kate Spade). I am looking forward to comparing the event with BlogHer handmade, which I am attending in September.

Are you going to Alt Summit? I’d love to meet up!

currently…

loving… The Hairpin – A recently launched “ladies website.” It is basically a general-interest blog that links to everything from politics to beauty articles and provides clever and lol-funny commentary. It is a tiny bit snarky and a little obscene, but I can’t get enough of it!

watching & reading… The Walking Dead – I read the first three trade paperbacks of the comics and I am pretty pumped about the tv series. The first few episodes had me worried (some lame dialog, heavy-hitting lessons in humanity), but this Sunday’s episode was pretty awesome with the zombie attack at the end. I’m a fan.

thinking… about my maternal grandparents. I watched 1952′s Room For One More over the weekend and it reminded me of them. It was made before my mom was born, and all of the 1950s style — the clothing, the way of talking, the large families and stay-at-home moms in dresses — made me think of my mother’s family growing up. Cary Grant is skinny, and tall, and dark like my grandfather was, and Betsy Drake plays the caring mother of five (my grandmother had six). It is funny how much style and society can change in a little over 50 years…

worrying over… whether to just go see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1) without any prep, or to re-read the books and/or re-watch the movies again before hand. I feel like I’ve been away from it for too long…
