currently 2012…

reading: The Girl Who Played with Fire. I actually haven’t started it yet, but I just finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and I enjoyed it. It didn’t 100% live up to my admittedly overly high expectations — so many otherwise strong female characters fell in love with the dashing male protagonist that it started to feel like the author’s fantasy — but it was an enthralling mystery. I will definitely finish the series.

playing: Tiny Tower. Travis introduced me to this cute iPhone game. You build a tiny tower community floor by floor. I have 17 floors so far…

watching: Portlandia. Travis and I watched the full first season over the weekend. It is a weird show, but as a past Oregonian, I often laughed out loud. In the first episode there is a line about how people in Portland ride unicycles and double-decker bikes… which is funny because it is completely true.

getting pumped for: The TinkerBell Half Marathon. In just 22 days, Chelsea and I will be running 13 miles through Disney Land! I can’t wait to visit family and ride Space Mountain!

What are you up to at the start of this fresh, new year?

feeling… exhausted and discouraged. Running is very difficult for me and it refuses to get any easier. A straight year of marathon training and I have nothing to show for it. No increase in fitness — my apartment stairs still leave me breathless. No gain in speed — I am one of the very slowest on our team. No weight loss — I still feel like a slug. And definitely no gains in confidence — every time I run, it makes me depressed and angry. That sounds dramatic, but it is the truth. I’m not really sure where to go from here… I guess running just isn’t going to be my thing, no matter how many 10-mile Saturday runs I complete.

a mystery

I did not intend to spend this long holiday weekend on the couch, but I have still been feeling sick. Yuck. Despite my intensions to be unendingly productive today, all I have managed to accomplish is finding a new television show to follow. Travis and I watched all three of the first episodes of BBC Masterpiece’s new, contemporary Sherlock Holmes series. It is kooky and hip and fun. Sherlock is a weird and web-savvy consulting detective and Watson (played by my fave, Martin Freeman) is his tough war vet roommate. I recommend it. AND, you can watch it right now on Netflix’s instant streaming service!

Martha Show redux

I had the opportunity to attend another Martha Stewart Show taping on Tuesday. It was the entrepreneur episode and I thought it would be a good opportunity to network and spread the word about Ace Department. So, I got up early, put on a new purple dress (Martha likes everyone in the audience to wear bright colors), and got on the train into Chelsea. (Gosh! What an unflattering photo of me, but I had to share it because Martha is right there in the background! Sweet!)

I’ve been to Martha tapings twice before and they really are always a good time. The staff is totally professional and friendly and the tapings run like a machine. The set was all decked out in Easter colors this time – very springy. It is definitely worth the trip into Manhattan to attend a taping (even if you have to wait outside in the rain for an hour once you get there), but it is still hard to lose half a day away from the office… always lots to do!!

The episode introduced a handful of successful small business owners (Beecher’s Handmade Cheese, One Kings Lane, Famaesthetics, and Idea Paint) and covered a few small business resources. The fun part is that each of the small businesses gave us gifts to take home! I got some cheese, spices, hand salve, a gift card (that I already spent), and some cool paint that turns your wall into a dry erase board. I feel almost guilty taking home so many goodies after each show!

All in all, another fun experience. Martha took some questions from the audience after the show and she basically gushed about her new granddaughter, Jude. It was sweet. I don’t know how she does it all. She is 70 years old, looks fantastic, hosts a live show, runs a company, and manages to visit her granddaughter every day. I know she has a ton of help, but it still sounds exhausting! She must truly be a “short sleeper” like she claims.

(How do I get all these tickets? If you like Martha, live in the NYC area, and have a flexible schedule, I recommend following TheMarthaShow on Twitter. They often announce upcoming shows with available tickets.)

another trip down Martha lane…

I was lucky enough to attend my second Martha Show taping yesterday. (You can read about my first taping here.) I follow TheMarthaShow on Twitter and they often tweet about upcoming shows that have seats available. If you live in the New York area and have a flexible schedule, you can contact them when you see a tweet about available tickets. As a single attendee, like me, I think it is easier for them to squeeze you into less than full audiences.

I attended the afternoon taping (they had taped a live show in the morning, too) and was at the studio for almost four hours. It took a big chunk out of my workday, but it was totally worth it. I love seeing Martha and her team in action. They are all so professional and nice. (They also all dress extremely nice – casual, but completely fashionable and neat.) They really work hard to make sure the audience has a fun time.

The show will air tomorrow, Thursday, February 3rd at 10 am on the Hallmark Chanel. I am sitting in the front row of the upper audience section and I think they caught me on camera a few times… I hope I don’t look too dorky. I think I was wearing too much blush and I really hope I don’t come across as someone desperate to be on tv….

Anyhoo, the show was great. The girls from Crafternoon were there to make vintage-inspired valentines and Grace Young, a Chinese chef, was there demonstrating two kinds of stir fry. The best part: we got to take home a bunch of free gifts! I try not to get my hopes up for free stuff, but it is definitely always welcome. We received the Crafternoon book (yay!), the cookbook, Stir Frying to the Sky’s Edge, and a handy, little slicing tool from Grace Young, and a Sony Pocket eReader!! Martha had on Abraham Verghese, the author of her latest “Books I’m Reading” selection, Cutting for Stone — which looks very interesting — and we got an e-copy of his book on the eReader! Very cool! I am charging mine right now and can’t wait to play with it and start reading.

An exciting tidbit: I got to ask Martha a question after the show! They allowed a little time at the end to ask her a few questions and I raised my hand to ask about her lip. She had cut it pretty bad a few weeks ago and posted about it on her blog. She says it is pretty much healed and it does look fantastic — you couldn’t even tell she had been cut. One more exciting tidbit: maybe I shouldn’t share too much, but Martha used the word grandchild during the Q&A session!! Sounds like she may have some good news to share soon!

All in all, it was another great experience at The Martha Show, but I have a question: how many tapings do you think you have to attend before they put your name on the “crazy fanatic/groupie/stalker” list? I sure hope I’m not on my way down that path! I do love Martha, but maybe I should tone down all of the Martha tweeting and Martha blogging… what do you think?

golden globe gowns

I went to a friend’s house last night to watch the Golden Globe Awards with a group of fun ladies. We had a good time discussing the movies (almost all of which I have NOT seen) and the fashion. Since I already put in the hard work of watching the ceremony and doing the critique, I thought I’d share some of my favorite gowns…

I obviously really liked the neutral color trend. I also didn’t mind the prevalence of long sleeves and the emphasis on shoulders. From left to right: Leighton Meester in Burberry, Julie Bowen in Tadashi Shoji, Sandra Bullock in Jenny Packham (but I’m not a huge fan of her bangs), Anne Hathaway in Giorgio Armani Prive, and my very favorite: Olivia Wilde in Marchesa.

I don’t like the “worst dressed” lists — they are so mean — but here i go anyway…. my least favorite were Jennifer Lopez and Halle Berry. I like creativity, but Lopez’s cape wasn’t really doing it for me. And I know that Halle Berry is super-sexy, but it just seemed like she was trying way too hard to look hot in her corset gown. Not my favorite.

Anyway, please add to this very important conversation by adding your favorite Golden Globe fashions in the comments…

loving… The Hairpin – A recently launched “ladies website.” It is basically a general-interest blog that links to everything from politics to beauty articles and provides clever and lol-funny commentary. It is a tiny bit snarky and a little obscene, but I can’t get enough of it!

watching & reading… The Walking Dead – I read the first three trade paperbacks of the comics and I am pretty pumped about the tv series. The first few episodes had me worried (some lame dialog, heavy-hitting lessons in humanity), but this Sunday’s episode was pretty awesome with the zombie attack at the end. I’m a fan.

thinking… about my maternal grandparents. I watched 1952′s Room For One More over the weekend and it reminded me of them. It was made before my mom was born, and all of the 1950s style — the clothing, the way of talking, the large families and stay-at-home moms in dresses — made me think of my mother’s family growing up. Cary Grant is skinny, and tall, and dark like my grandfather was, and Betsy Drake plays the caring mother of five (my grandmother had six). It is funny how much style and society can change in a little over 50 years…

worrying over… whether to just go see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1) without any prep, or to re-read the books and/or re-watch the movies again before hand. I feel like I’ve been away from it for too long…

The Martha Stewart Show

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend a live taping of the Martha Stewart Show. I have been wanting to attend a Martha taping ever since moving to New York, but I just couldn’t seem to make the time to go stand in line for stand-by tickets. Luckily, staff from the Martha Show saw one of my recent tweets about a Martha Stewart cookie recipe and contacted me. They were looking for Twitter enthusiasts to live-tweet the taping of yesterday’s Cookie Episode.

The Twitter group got to sit in a special section for the taping and we were encouraged to tweet throughout the show. We used the hashtag #MarthaTweets in all of our posts, and we basically just had a great time”reporting” on the show. (BTW, we weren’t told what to tweet or given any restrictions. All of the staff were extremely welcoming and nice.)

Because it was the Cookie Episode, we got to take home home baking loot and sample two cookies (sugar & Mexican chocolate). They were both delicious! Truly. I was impressed. I was also impressed with the efficiency and professionalism of the entire staff and crew. The taping went so smoothly and quickly with no mistakes. Another fun fact: Martha helped clean up the set during the commercial breaks. No one can say she isn’t an extremely hard worker!

Martha also announced her new Cookie iPad App during the show. We got to play with the app a bit and it truly is beautiful. It contains all of Martha’s cookie recipes and stunning photos. It is $7.99, which sounds pricey for an app, but if you like baking I think it is worth it. In comparison, the Martha Stewart Holiday Cookies magazine issue is $6.95.

If you want to see all of my tweets from the show, check out my @rljart Twitter account and check out this list of all the Twitter users who were in the audience yesterday. Follow the @TheMarthShow Twitter account for info and updates about the show, and click here to find out how you can be apart of the next audience Twitter section.

opposite

This post is based on the blogging prompt “Write a post about what you imagine as the ‘opposite’ type of person as you” from IndieBizChicks’ September Blogging Special.

Rachel

I have been thinking about the idea of my opposite for days since receiving the blogging prompt in my email… what a fascinating and mind-boggling idea! I think I have been having so much trouble coming up with a description of someone who is my complete opposite because I am not totally sure of exactly who I am or how I define myself… Would my opposite be someone who looks different than me, likes different things than me, thinks differently than me? It is very complicated to consider!

Who is Rachel? What is Rachel?

The big picture:

  • open-minded, probably to a fault…
  • passionate proponent of diversity
  • lover of art and creative expression
  • believer in true love

The details:

  • wife, sister, daughter
  • American
  • dog-lover (Crusher wanted me to add that)
  • cute stuff enthusiast
  • wannabe runner
  • web entrepreneur

That is all I know for sure… or at least all that is coming to mind… So, what does that mean about my opposite? What would they be like?

the opposite of Rachel

Rachel’s opposite:

  • dogmatic
  • exclusionary
  • dark and dangerous
  • cat lover (Crusher wanted me to add that one – I actually like cats…)
  • maybe a gun enthusiast, death metal lover, neo-nazi, ultimate fighting champion?
  • or, maybe an Olympic athlete (I am horrible at sports), dessert hater?

Man, that was tough!! How would you describe your opposite? If you published a post based on this blogging prompt, please leave a link. I would love to see how other people thought through this idea…
